Candia launches organic milk in SIG aluminum-free carton

Candia, part of French dairy cooperative Sodiaal, is launching an organic milk in SIG’s aluminum-free carton pack, SIGNATURE PACK 100.

The aseptic carton pack has polymers linked to plant-based renewable material made of 75% FSC-certied renewable paperboard from sustainably-managed forests.

SIG chose to use a by-product from the paper industry known as tall oil for the plant-based feedstock rather than an agricultural crop to avoid using land and resources that could be used to produce food.

“By working with SIG we have succeeded in launching an organic milk in the rst aluminum-free UHT milk carton onto the French market, Candia is oering an alternative to consumers who want to cut the use of fossil fuels and buy organic milk in a more sustainable packaging,” said Yves Legros, GM, Candia.

SIGNATURE PACK 100’s design protects the milk and maintains the shelf life performance expected in France for UHT milk without the need for an aluminum barrier layer.  By removing the aluminum layer and linking the polymers to renewable rather than fossil-based material, the carton has a 58% lower carbon footprint than a standard SIG pack (based on a Europe-wide Life Cycle Assessment).

Melanie Revolte, marketing manager France, SIG, said the launch in France will promote the use of renewable materials and reduce the carbon footprint of packaging without compromising functionality or recyclability.
