In the context of increasing demand for consumer goods, packaged foods, bottled beverages and pharmaceutical products, Vietnam’s packaging and printing industry is being evaluated as a potential market with stable annual growth rate. Moreover, since sustainable development is supposed to be the global mainstream, a number of changes are predicted to be made on packaging and printing industry in the future.

Maintaining the stable growth rate

According to Association of Vietnam Retailers (AVR), Vietnam with its over 90 millions of inhabitants, a huge number of tourists have been attracted every year, the constant development of retail systems, food, beverage and pharmaceutical industry, and the annual growth reaches 15 – 20% through years – is gradually asserting itself as a main industrial hub to invest in. As reported by Euromonitor, food packaging in Vietnam will increase and create a driving force for the development of plastic and packaging industry due to the constant growth of plastic consumption in Vietnam.

In addition, as the US-China trade war escalates, Vietnam becomes the center in the wave of relocating production facilities, bringing many opportunities and challenges to the national economy and the packaging industry in particular. Meanwhile, the manufacturing industry accounts for 70% of total foreign investment in Vietnam, which will lead to an increasing demand for packaging.

Future trends for the plastic industry

The problem of minimizing plastic waste puts pressure on the manufacturing and packaging industry, as consumers focus on smart and environmentally – friendly packaging products. Ho Chi Minh City has set the goal by the end of 2020 to use 100% environmentally – friendly packaging at the supermarkets, malls, bookstores and convenience stores. Small businesses in the market will reduce 50% of plastic bags in packaging – replace indestructible plastic bags, minimize plastic products and single-use packaging. “Green packaging” will change the entire needs and habits of consumers, simultaneously requires manufacturing and packaging industry to improve technology and make the new shape for the future packaging trends.
